Reaffirms longstanding ties in meeting with Lebanese PM, calls for immediate cessation of hostilities

Pakistan and Bangladesh on Thursday reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthen bilateral ties as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met his Bangladeshi counterpart Tarique Rahman on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two leaders reviewed bilateral relations during their meeting and expressed satisfaction over the positive momentum in Pakistan-Bangladesh ties.
“Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated Bangladesh on assuming the Presidency of the 81st UNGA and expressed Pakistan’s support for Bangladesh’s efforts to advance the objectives of the United Nations,” the statement said.

The prime minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s resolve to further deepen mutually beneficial bilateral relations with Bangladesh, it added.
Bangladeshi premier reciprocated the sentiment, expressing satisfaction over the positive trajectory of bilateral ties and noting his government’s keen desire to enhance Bangladesh-Pakistan relations.
The two leaders also exchanged views on regional and global developments and emphasised the importance of continued coordination at multilateral forums, particularly the United Nations.
PM Shehbaz calls for end to hostilities in Lebanon
PM Shehbaz also met his Lebanese counterpart Nawaf Salam on the sidelines of the UNGA session and reaffirmed Pakistan’s steadfast support for Lebanon’s sovereignty, political independence, unity and territorial integrity.
According to a separate statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, PM Shehbaz called for an immediate cessation of hostilities, strict adherence to ceasefire arrangements, complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from occupied Lebanese territory and full implementation of United Nations Security Council resolutions.

The two leaders reviewed bilateral relations and reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening the longstanding and fraternal ties between Pakistan and Lebanon.
They also exchanged views on developments in the Middle East and the wider region.
The two sides discussed ways to further enhance bilateral cooperation, including through high-level exchanges, trade and investment, defence and institutional linkages.
Both countries reaffirmed the importance of continued coordination at the United Nations and other multilateral forums.
