QUETTA:

PPP Chairman Bilawal-Bhutto Zardari’s visit to Quetta on Friday once again brought party leader Shazia Marri into the political spotlight, as her continued presence alongside him during official engagements revived discussion in political circles over internal optics, hierarchy and conduct within the party.

The renewed attention comes after a recent incident in Islamabad, where during a press conference, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had expressed strong displeasure when Shazia Marri responded to a journalist’s question on his behalf.

The moment was widely circulated on social media and quickly became a point of discussion across political and media circles, with interpretations ranging from protocol sensitivity to intra-party communication style.

Against this backdrop, Shazia Marri was once again seen accompanying the PPP chairman throughout his Quetta engagements on Friday.

She remained visibly present during project inaugurations, participated in official moments alongside him, and was also seated next to him at public events in an arrangement that did not go unnoticed in political circles.

Her continued proximity to the party chairman during the visit has triggered renewed speculation about whether the earlier Islamabad episode prompted a subtle recalibration in internal party optics or a soft correction in approach at the leadership level.

Some political observers have suggested that the developments may indicate that Bilawal-Bhutto Zardari not only reflected on the earlier exchange but also came to regard his reaction towards Shazia Marri as inappropriate.

In this reading, her visible inclusion in Quetta engagements is being interpreted as an attempt to smooth over the impact of the Islamabad incident within party ranks and restore equilibrium in public presentation.

Her inclusion in the Quetta visit and sustained visibility at key moments, they argue, has further deepened speculation that the party is consciously working to manage perceptions and settle internal discomfort generated by the earlier viral exchange.

Meanwhile, PPP MNA and spokesperson Shazia Marri said on Friday that one instance of interaction between two people who had worked closely for several years “cannot be viewed in isolation”, after a video clip of PPP Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari curtness with her went viral on social media.

The incident took place at a press conference after the PPP’s parliamentary party meeting at the Parliament House in Islamabad on Thursday.

During the briefing, a journalist asked Bilawal for his views on ministers in the federal government suggesting that education, health and other subjects, particularly the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), be devolved back to the Centre under a proposed 28th Constitutional Amendment.

Several subjects, including education and health, were devolved to the provinces under the 18th Constitutional Amendment in 2010.

Bilawal began his reply by stating that he was not aware which federal minister the journalist was referring to.

At that point, Marri, who was also present at the press conference, corrected him, stating that it was not a federal minister but Minister of State for Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony Kesoo Mal Kheal Das.

Das was reported last week to have said while speaking to reporters that the government was considering devolving BISP to the provinces.

After Marri’s clarification, Bilawal responded, “I am not asking you.”

Marri immediately began apologising, but Bilawal interjected and said, “Thank you.”

As the clip went viral across social media platforms, Marri appeared to address the controversy in a post on X.

“One interaction that made its way on social media, between people who have worked closely together for many years, cannot be viewed in isolation. PPP has always prioritised the collective good of the people and nothing should take away from our joint mission of public service,” she said.

Her post came in response to another social media post noting that coverage of the press conference had been overshadowed by that “one instance”.
