Sindh to induct 50 double-decker, 500 electric buses

Sharjeel Memon says new buses will improve public transport as land for depots is identified

Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon on Saturday said the government was inducting 50 double-decker buses and 500 new electric (EV) buses into the transport system, which will bring significant improvement to the province’s public transport.

The senior minister chaired a key meeting on Saturday regarding land allocation for bus depots and the transport plan for various public transport projects. The meeting was attended by Transport Secretary Asad Zamin, Karachi Development Authority (KDA) Director General Asif Jan Siddiqui, deputy commissioners of Malir, Korangi, Karachi Central and Karachi West, and senior officials of relevant departments.

Officials briefed the minister on land requirements for public transport projects, including parking and operational facilities for buses. The availability of government land in different districts, proposed sites, and future needs were reviewed to identify suitable locations for bus depots.

On the occasion, Memon directed officials to immediately complete the identification and allocation of suitable land for bus depots. He also instructed all deputy commissioners to identify vacant government land in their respective districts for the establishment of modern bus depots for mass transit projects.

“The timely availability of proper depots and operational infrastructure is essential for the success of these projects,” he said, adding that all relevant institutions should complete land identification and other necessary arrangements at the earliest through mutual coordination.

The senior minister reaffirmed the Sindh government’s commitment to providing citizens with modern, comfortable, eco-friendly, world-class travel facilities. He said the government aims to bring the new buses onto the roads for public service as soon as possible, and that ongoing projects in the public transport sector will bring revolutionary changes to the province’s transport system.
