India, UAE agree to boost trade and defence ties, finalise LNG deal

India and the United Arab Emirates agreed on Monday to double bilateral trade to $200 billion within six years and to strengthen defence cooperation following talks between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The two leaders met in New Delhi, where they also witnessed the finalisation of a 10-year agreement under which Abu Dhabi state oil company ADNOC will supply 0.5 million metric tons of liquefied natural gas annually to India’s Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd.

India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed the agreements while briefing reporters after the meeting.

India and the United Arab Emirates will explore a partnership in advanced civil nuclear technologies, India’s foreign secretary said on Monday.

UAE and India also aim to double the trade to $200b till 2032, he added.
