Swiss Rapper Nemo Makes History as First Non-Binary Eurovision Winner with ‘The Code’

Swiss rapper and multi-instrumentalist Nemo made history as the first non-binary winner of the Eurovision Song Contest, triumphing with their song “The Code” at the event held in Malmö, Sweden. The politically charged competition witnessed Nemo scoring 365 points from the juries and 226 from the public, totaling 591 points.

Nemo, who announced their non-binary identity in November, expressed pride in representing the non-binary, gender-fluid, and transgender community. They stated, “The Code is about the journey I started with the realization that I am neither a man nor a woman… Finding myself has been a long and often difficult process for me. But nothing feels better than the freedom I have gained by realizing that I am non-binary.”

Born in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland, Nemo, also known as Nemo Mettler, has been active in the music industry since 2015, with notable chart success, including their single “Du” reaching number four on the Swiss charts in 2017. Their Eurovision entry, “The Code,” was praised for its fusion of rap, opera, pop, and drum and bass.

Reflecting on the inspiration behind “The Code,” Nemo explained, “It reminds them of James Bond, or if Freddie Mercury came back and decided to do K-Pop… There are so many influences in the song.” They emphasized the personal connection to the song, stating, “It feels like me and the song are the same, we’re one.”

Nemo’s victory at Eurovision marks a significant milestone, not only for their career but also for the representation of non-binary individuals in the music industry. They highlighted the importance of empathy and understanding, stating, “We need more compassion, we need more empathy, we need to listen to each other… I hope that tonight can be a way of remembering that.”

Reflecting on their unexpected journey to Eurovision, Nemo admitted, “I never expected to end up at Eurovision… But then for the first time, in 2023, I was able to go.” Despite initial surprises, Nemo embraced the opportunity to showcase their talents on the global stage, ultimately making history with their victory.

Nemo’s win not only celebrates their musical talent but also represents a significant step forward in promoting inclusivity and diversity within the Eurovision Song Contest and the music industry at large.
