West Indies were limited to 135-8 in 20 overs in the pivotal Super 8 match of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 against South Africa at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua.
South African spinners Aiden Markram, Tabraiz Shamsi, and Keshav Maharaj contained the Windies batters, conceding only 79 runs in 12 overs at an economy rate of 6.58, while also taking five wickets. Shamsi was the standout bowler with figures of 3-27 in four overs. Roston Chase, who was dropped on 11 and 14, was the top scorer for the Windies with 52 runs off 42 balls.
Earlier, South Africa won the toss and elected to bowl first. The winner of today’s match will become the second team from Group 2 to qualify for the semi-finals after England.
“Going to bowl first. Can’t see the wicket getting any worse. Hoping it gets slightly better this evening. We’re in a good space. Haven’t put together a perfect game yet. The wind is really strong. Obviously, the pitch has moved across. Generally a good batting wicket, gets slower as it goes on. Shamsi comes in for Baartman,” said South Africa captain Aiden Markram at the toss.
Meanwhile, Windies skipper Rovman Powell commented: “Was 50-50 with the toss. Would’ve bowled as well. We’re Caribbean guys playing in our home conditions. We should be able to adapt quickly. It’s a team we have played often over the last couple of years. Kyle Mayers comes in for Johnson Charles.”
