Miftah sees Fazl as strong contender for PM

LAHORE:

Lauding the cleric-politician’s political prowess, former finance minister and Awaam Pakistan Party (APP) leader Miftah Ismail has said that JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman could potentially serve as the country’s prime minister for a period of one to one-and-a-half years.

While speaking on Express News’ programme ‘Centre Stage’ on Friday, Miftah pointed out that politicians such as Fazl’s stature were rare in Pakistan, adding that the JUI-F chief could be a suitable candidate to lead as prime minister for 18 months.

Commenting on the ongoing talks, he stressed the importance of negotiations to reduce political tensions.

“At least during talks, there won’t be protests or violence. Dialogue is always a good step and should continue,” he added.

The APP leader further stressed that the ultimate solution to Pakistan’s challenges lies in holding elections and respecting the will of the people.

Touching on pressing economic issues, the former finance minister slammed the government over its failed attempt to privatise PIA, and attributed the failure to a lack of political will.

Commenting on the stock market’s recent performance, Ismail noted that the stock market has surged due to lower interest rates, and it could rise even further.

However, this, he added, had nothing to do with government policies.

He further lambasted the current administration for prioritising political gains over necessary economic reforms. “The prime minister has avoided imposing taxes and has refrained from pension reforms.”

Economic reforms are not on his agenda as political interests are being prioritised,” he added.

Pointing out a 7% reduction in imports, the former finance minister, however, warned that the high tax rates could deter investments unless positive economic indicators are established.
