ISLAMABAD:
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has released an updated list of 166 registered political parties in the country. However, the list omits the name of the new PTI chairman, Gohar Ali Khan.
According to the list, Nawaz Sharif is now the president of the ruling PML-N, while Hafiz Naeemur Rehman is mentioned as the new chief of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI). Asif Ali Zardari remains the president of the PPP-Parliamentarian, with Bilawal Bhutto Zardari serving as the chairman of the PPP. Mahmood Khan is listed as the chairman of PTI-Parliamentarian.
Asfandyar Wali continues as the president of the Awami National Party (ANP). Interestingly, the Pak Sarzameen Party (PSP), which had merged with the MQM-P last year, remains a registered party in the ECP’s records.
PTI founder Imran Khan, after his conviction in the Toshakhana case last year, became ineligible to hold the position of the party chairman. On December 2, the PTI held intra-party elections and chose Gohar Ali Khan as the new party chairman.
However, the ECP annulled the intra-party polls due to irregularities in their conduct. Later, on January 14, the Supreme Court upheld the ECP’s order. After the general elections, the PTI conducted intra-party elections again on March 3, 2024, to choose Gohar Ali Khan as its chief for the second time.
However, the ECP has not listed his name as the new party chairman.
