PPP resolution in NA urges relief for flood victims
ISLAMABAD:
The PPP on Friday submitted a resolution in the National Assembly calling for urgent national and international response to the ongoing flood and agricultural crisis across the country.
The resolution noted that over 1,000 people have died in the floods so far, while 5.8 million people have been affected and 4 million displaced.
According to the text, Punjab has suffered massive crop damage, with 60% of rice, 35% of cotton and 30% of sugarcane destroyed. More than 1.3 million acres of agricultural land in the eastern rivers are submerged, severely impacting the current Kharif yield.
The resolution demanded waiver of electricity bills for flood-hit people, cash transfers through the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), and provision of medicines and healthcare facilities to affected areas.
The resolution stressed the immediate need for national and global humanitarian response, including a UN-led international flash appeal.
